Easy Apple Suncatcher Craft for Preschoolers 🍎

Looking for an easy fall or apple-themed craft for preschoolers? This Apple Suncatcher Craft is simple to prep, fun for little hands, and looks so pretty hanging in a sunny window!

I love activities that let kids create without worrying about making everything look exactly the same. Every apple turns out a little different!

What You'll Need

  • Red construction paper

  • Clear packing tape

  • Parchment paper

  • Red, yellow, and green tissue paper cut into small squares

  • Scissors

How to Make Your Apple Suncatcher

You can watch the video of me making these HERE:

Start by cutting a large apple shape out of red construction paper.

Cut out the middle of the apple so you're left with a red apple-shaped frame.

Next, place strips of clear packing tape across the opening with the sticky side facing up. I like to use parchment paper as a backing while I'm getting everything ready. It keeps the tape covered until we're ready to use it.

When it's time for the kids to create, peel away the parchment paper and you've basically made a giant apple sticker!

Now comes the fun part.

Let the kids place little squares of red, yellow, and green tissue paper all over the sticky center of the apple. They can overlap the colors, make patterns, or simply fill it in however they'd like.

Once the apple is covered, it's ready to display!

What Are Kids Learning?

This simple craft sneaks in quite a bit of learning and development.

Picking up those little tissue paper squares is great fine motor practice and helps strengthen the small muscles kids will eventually use for writing, cutting, buttoning, and other everyday skills.

Kids are also working on:

  • Color recognition

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • Creativity

  • Making choices

  • Fine motor control

And because there isn't one "right" way to decorate the apple, it's a great open-ended art activity.

Put It in the Window!

My favorite part is displaying the finished apples near a window where the sunlight can shine through the tissue paper. They have a pretty stained-glass look that's perfect for fall.

We displayed ours near our tree and window, and they made such a cute addition to our fall decorations.

This is an easy activity to add to an apple theme, fall preschool unit, fine motor center, or afternoon craft.

Sometimes the simplest activities are the best!

Love, Miss Annette
